Pipili Applique

Description

Pipili Applique- Pipili craft, or Chandua is traditional applique technique of Pipili, Odisha. They use small, vibrant color pieces fabric to stich on the base fabric to create motifs. Traditionally they use Pipili for Lord Jagannath's chariots, canopies, umbrellas, ritual dresses, hand fans in specific colors like Red and Yellow for Lord Jagannath, Red and Green for Lord Balabhadra, Red and Black for Devi Subhadra. Today they used this craft in lampshades, wall hangings, furnishings, bags and functional items. Traditional motifs are phoola (flowers), chakra (Konark chakra), animals, patra (leaves), trees, deity motifs etc.
